14 Columbia Artists Exhibit Work at Art Basel in Miami Beach
14 Columbia visual artists, including three faculty members and eleven alumni, will exhibit work this year at Art Basel Miami Beach, which runs from December 1-3, 2022.
This year marks the fair’s 20th anniversary in Miami and will feature over 280 exhibitors, 20 large-scale projects, 29 installations, and a conversation series with critics, collectors, and artists.
The layout of this year’s rendition will spread more widely than in previous years, expanding throughout the city to foreground previously underrepresented spaces and sections of the city.
Attendees will have the opportunity to explore traditional gallery exhibits ranging from works created by emerging and established artists, historically poignant artistic practices as part of the Survey section, and large-scale conceptual art installations as part of the Meridians platform, curated by Mexico City based curator Magali Arriola.
Among the faculty presenting works are Assistant Professor David Antonio Cruz and Assistant Professor Adama Delphine Fawundu ’18, who is also an alumna of the Visual Arts Program. Both artists’ work focus on kinship and belonging.
Antonio Cruz’s intersectionally forward works in painting, drawing, video, and performance contest gender and identity stereotypes. Delphine Fawundu’s works in photography and mixed media investigate and expand notions of kin, community, and diasporic history.
Alongside their works, Visual Arts Mentor, David Humphrey, will present a series of acrylic paintings on canvas with Fredericks and Freiser Gallery. Humphrey’s cross-disciplinary work employs psychosocial narratives as it simultaneously blurs the edges of geometry and figuration in order to articulate the power dynamics inherent within the body politic.
A wide range of alumni (both in graduation year and artistic medium) will exhibit work as part of Art Basel and the New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA), which will be held at Ice Palace Studios.
Among the alumni participating are:
