Join us Thursday, March 5th, at 7 pm, for the next Columbia Selects reading of the 2019-20 season!

Our lineup this month:

Natalie Zhao '17 is a writer living in New York. She grew up in Richmond, Virginia and worked for Marlboro before receiving her MFA in creative nonfiction from Columbia University. When she's not breaking excel spreadsheets at her day job in finance, Natalie is working on an essay collection exploring how memory, cultural inheritance, and experience come to shape the stories we tell ourselves about who we are. Her grand (if questionable) unified theory of identity utilizes history, myth, and scientific theory—which is to say, Mao Zedong, the Marlboro man, Joseph-Louis Lagrange, and her parents are all featured in her work.

Daniel Felsenthal '15 writes fiction and nonfiction. His essays and criticism have appeared in Los Angeles Review of BooksKenyon ReviewPitchforkHyperallergicThe Village Voice and BOMB, among other publications, and he has published short stories in several literary magazines. In 2019, his novella, Sex With Andre, was published by The Puritan. He is an Assistant Editor at NOON and is currently at work on a novel. Read more at Danielfelsenthal.com.

Laura Lisabeth '83 lives in Huntington, NY, and teaches writing at Stony Brook University. She writes nonfiction and creative academic essays that explore history, language and race. Her most recent publication is in the December issue of Radical Teacher and is titled "White Fears of Dispossession: Dreyer's English, The Elements of Style and the Racial Mapping of English Language."

What is Columbia Selects? The first Thursday of each month the Columbia MFA program hosts a reading series featuring Writing Program alumni. These fresh talents are finished with or near to finished with their first books, but do not yet have a book contract and/or an agent. In recent years, many of our featured writers have achieved critical and commercial success. This is your chance to glimpse who you'll be reading in 2021!

Columbia Selects is curated by Bryan VanDyke '00 and Emily Austin '10.

Come for the talent. Stay for the camaraderie and cocktails.
