Noa Steimatsky

Noa Steimatsky’s writing and teaching braid questions of film history, theory, and aesthetics. Her work in all its aspects is informed by a continued exploration of realism and modernism, the postwar “crisis of representation,” and cinema’s relationship to traditional (even archaic) arts and media. She is author of the award-winning The Face on Film (Oxford University Press, 2017), and Italian Locations: Reinhabiting the Past in Postwar Cinema (University of Minnesota Press, 2008). She was recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship, the National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship, the American Council of Learned Societies Fellowship, the American Academy in Rome Prize, and the Getty Research Grant. She was faculty member at Yale University, tenured at the University of Chicago, and visiting faculty at Stanford, UC-Berkeley, and Sarah Lawrence College. Her groundbreaking research on the uses and abuses of the Cinecittà movie studios during World War II inspired a documentary film and is being expanded into a book, to be published by Columbia University Press.
