‘Trumpet’ By Student Kevin Haefelin Wins Maverick Award at Woodstock Film Festival 2020
Student Kevin Haefelin won the Maverick Award for Best Student Short Film at the Woodstock Film Festival 2020 for his film Trumpet. Written and directed by Haefelin, produced by Youmi Haefelin-Roch and with student Alex Yarber serving as Unit Production Manager, Trumpet took the edge over five other shorts in its section.
In Trumpet, a Japanese trumpet player on a cultural pilgrimage to discover New York City jazz experiences one hell of a night after getting lost in Brooklyn.
The jury described the film as “a fresh, well crafted, and funny look into what can happen when someone is separated from their devices and plastic cards in the dead of night in an unfamiliar city.”
Kevin Haefelin is a Swiss filmmaker based in New York. His latest short film, Trumpet, has been shortlisted for the 2020 BAFTA Student Film Awards. Chosen as a script reader for the 2020 Sundance Institute's Screenwriters Lab, Haefelin is now writing his first feature film.

The Woodstock Film Festival has announced the official line-up for the upcoming 21st edition of the festival with three entries by Columbia filmmakers on the list. Both The Outsiders, directed by student Gleb Osatinski and co-written by Osatinski and student Joshua Harris, and Brooklyn Park, written by alumna Elizabeth Rose '17, will participate in the Narrative Short category in the Unsettled section. Meanwhile, Trumpet, a film written, directed and produced by student Kevin Haefelin will also run in the Narrative Shorts category but is placed in the Student Shorts section.
The festival will take place from September 30 to October 4, 2020 with in-person screenings at multiple drive-in locations in the Woodstock area. The festival will also host an online program of feature length and short films through a virtual event platform.
In Outsiders, Dmitry and Zhenya are Russians living on expired visas in New York with their 7-month-old daughter Dasha. Dasha was born in the US and is a citizen. When the baby has an accident one night, Zhenya wants to take her to the hospital, but Dmitry is reluctant, fearing they will be separated from her and deported. The screening is Outsiders’ New York premiere.
Gleb Osatinski has directed and produced six award-winning short films, which have screened at more than a dozen film festivals around the world. His film The Quantified Self was nominated for Best Narrative Short at Woodstock Film Festival, has received a Programmers Award at Sidewalk Film Festival, and Runner UP award at the Boston Underground Film Festival.
Joshua Harris is an American filmmaker who writes comedies with heart, and dramas with a sense of humor. His goal is to create witty work in film and TV that champions the little guy. His most recent script Surreal PolitiK was a finalist at the ScreenCraft Animation Competition 2019, a quarterfinalist at the ScreenCraft Comedy Contest 2020 and among the Top 100 at the Launch Pad Pilot Competition 2020.

The faces in the backseat change as he wrestles, unable to connect, with whether the unthinkable can be true, until a vision provides the clarity he seeks.
Elizabeth Rose is a Canadian-American filmmaker. She is known for The Law of Averages, Brooklyn Park, and Hjonabandssaela. In 2015, Rose was awarded the inaugural Alex Sichel Fellowship for a promising female filmmaker.
