February 12, 2018
The book, by award-winning German author Svenja Leiber, follows Ruven Preuk, who has an uncanny talent for the violin and meets a kindred spirit in a teacher from the Jewish quarter. Set amidst both World Wars, Ruven has to grapple with the question of how devoted he is to his music.
The novel is the winner of the 2015 Arno Rein Frank Literaturpreis, awarded to German-language writers.
Knight also adapted and translated a graphic novel, Voices in the Dark, which was published in October by the New York Review of Books’ comics imprint. She adapted it from another translation from the German by John Brownjohn.
The graphic novel, based on an acclaimed novel by Marcel Beyer, follows a sound engineer obsessed with recording the human voice and who works for the Nazis.
Knight is currently a journalist and translator living in southern Maine.
