Work by Alumnus Harrison David Rivers ’09 Featured in 2020 Roundabout Underground Reading Series, Directed by Jeffrey Page '19
The Bandaged Place, a play by Theatre alumnus Harrison David Rivers ’09, will be featured in Roundabout Theatre Company’s ninth annual Roundabout Underground Reading Series. The reading series will run February 3–7, everyday at 5 PM at StubHub (1412 Broadway). The Bandaged Place will be the culmination of the series and presented on February 7th. Entrance is free. The reading is directed by fellow alumnus, Jeffrey Page '19.
The Bandaged Place previously was the winner of the Relentless Award, the largest annual cash prize in American theater, established by The American Playwriting Foundation in honor of Philip Seymour Hoffman after his passing.
In The Bandaged Place, Jonah’s livelihood as a dancer is threatened by an injury inflicted by a former lover, and he retreats far within himself. The only people who might be able to pull him out are his tenacious grandmother, Geraldine, his spirited eight-year-old daughter, Ella and her ballet teacher, Sam. But will he allow them to help him heal? At once hopeful and heartbreaking, Harrison David Rivers’ delicate new drama considers how we move forward when our deepest wounds are often caused by those we love.
Harrison David Rivers is a Minnesota based playwright who is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of Drama at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. His plays include: When Last We Flew (GLAAD Media Award, NYFringe Excellence in Playwriting Award, NYFringe, Diversionary Theatre, TheatreLAB, Real Live Theatre), Sweet (AUDELCO nomination for Best Play, National Black Theatre), And She Would Stand Like This (20% Theatre Company, The Movement Theatre Company), Where Storms Are Born (Berkshire Theatre Award nomination for Best New Play, Edgerton Foundation New Play Award, Williamstown), A Crack in the Sky (History Theatre), Five Points (MN Theatre Award Nominee for Exceptional New Work, Theatre Latte Da), This Bitter Earth ((MN Theatre Award Nominee for Exceptional New Work, New Conservatory Theatre Center, Penumbra, About Face), and To Let Go and Fall (Theatre Latte Da). He has received McKnight and Many Voices Jerome Fellowships, a Van Lier Fellowship, an Emerging Artist of Color Fellowship and New York Stage & Film’s Founders’ Award.
