Mark Dion Receives Solo Exhibition at Tanya Bonkadar Gallery
March 18, 2016
Mentor Mark Dion’s solo exhibition The Library for the Birds of New York and Other Marvels is on view at Tanya Bonakdar Gallery through April 16.
Dion, who also had a recent installation at the Le Laboratoire in Boston, frequently features subjects of scientific study in his installations. His work explores the dominant ideologies that undergird how we understand the natural world and humans’ relation to it, particularly as reflected in public institutions dedicated to science and natural history. He is also a prolific collector of things, sometimes showing the objects he discovers in his exhibitions, as he does in The Library for the Birds of New York.
Dion received his BFA and an honorary doctorate from the University of Hartford’s Hartford School of Art in Connecticut. He has had exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, and the Miami Art Museum, among other institutions, and is the recipient of, among other honors, a Larry Aldrich Foundation Award, a Joan Mitchell Foundation Award and a Smithsonian American Art Museum's Lucida Art Award. He is currently the Ruffin Distinguished Fellow of the University of Virginia.
