Twilight's Kiss (Suk Suk), a feature film written and directed by alumnus Ray Yeung '13, was acquired by Strand Releasing for North American distribution and will soon be available on streaming platforms like Amazon prime, iTunes and Google Play.
Twilight’s Kiss premiered at the Busan Film Festival last year and was part of the Panorama section at this year’s Berlinale. The film also recently won the Best Film and Best Actor awards at the Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards and ran at the Frameline International Film Festival and the San Francisco Film Festival in official competition.
The film is a quiet portrayal of a gay relationship between two men in their twilight years. Pak, 70, a married taxi driver who refuses to retire, meets Hoi, 65, a retired single father. Twilight’s Kiss studies the subtle day-to-day moments of the two men as they struggle between conventional morals and their personal desires. The drama is Yeung’s first Chinese-language feature film.
Ray Yeung’s first feature film, Cut Sleeve Boys, premiered at the Rotterdam International Film Festival in 2005. The movie was theatrically released in various cities across America including Chicago and Los Angeles. It was also released in cinemas in Thailand, Taiwan and the Philippines. The movie is available on Netflix in the US and UK. Yeung’s second feature, the award-winning Front Cover premiered at the Seattle International Film Festival 2015, and was in Competition at the Chicago International Film Festival. It was the Closing Film for the Asian American International Film Festival in New York in 2016. Front Cover won Best Screenplay at the FilmOut San Diego LGBT Film Festival, Jury Award for Best Domestic Feature at the Outflix Film Festival in Memphis and Audience Award at the Boston Asian American Film Festival. Yeung has also written and directed eight short films, such as Yellow Fever, which won Best Short at the Madrid Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. He has also directed two plays, which were staged in London and Hong Kong: Banana Skin, which was also written by him, and The Third Sex. As a director and art director for television commercials, Yeung has worked for clients including 7-Eleven, Coca-Cola, McDonald’s and HSBC. He is the Chairman of the Hong Kong Lesbian and Gay Film Festival since 2000.
