Twenty-Four Columbia Artists Exhibiting Work at Art Basel in Miami

BY Logan Reed, December 5, 2018

Twenty-four Columbia artists, including five faculty members, one current student, and eighteen alumni will showcase their work at Art Basel in Miami, Florida this week. The international art fair, which began in the 1970s, connects collectors, galleries, and artists from around the globe, and for almost half a century has been supporting the central role of galleries in nurturing artists.

Leading galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia, and Africa will gather in Miami Beach where “over 200 of the world’s leading international modern and contemporary art galleries [will] display artworks by over 4,000 artists, including paintings, sculptures, installations, photography, film, video, and digital art,” according to the Art Basel website.

The American show in Miami will run from December 6 to December 9, 2018, and then it moves on to Hong Kong in spring 2019, and Basel, Switzerland after that in summer 2019.

Aliza Nisenbaum, full time faculty member, is exhibiting two pieces at the Anton Kern Gallery, Julie, 2018 and Veronica Reading The New York Times, 2018. Alumni Josephine Halvorson ’07 and Derrick Adams ’03 are both returning exhibitors at Art Basel Miami, who this year are featuring multiple pieces at different galleries. Mark Dion, a Columbia visual arts mentor, is exhibiting work at Georg Kargl Fine Arts as well as in the LeRoy Neiman off site, which takes place at Ocean Dr &, 12th St, Miami Beach, FL 33139. Alumna Nicola López ’04 is also featured in the LeRoy show. Dion—who is currently featured in a 2018-2019 traveling exhibition, Nature’s Nation: American Art and Environment, running through January 6th, 2019—participated in many shows this fall that explore topics like environmental history, climate change, and ecocriticism, some alongside Alumna Allison Janae Hamilton ’17, who is also participating in an Art Basel Miami 2018 off site put on by Special Projects Section at Indian Beach Park 4601 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, FL 33140.
