Marcel Spears '15 Stars in ABC Sitcom 'The Mayor'

November 1, 2017

Headshot of Marcel SpearsAlumnus Marcel Spears ‘15 has landed a breakout role with ABC's new comedy, The Mayor. From executive producer, Daveed Diggs (Tony Award winner for his role of Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson in Hamilton) who is also writing original music for the series, The Mayor tells the story of an unlikely mayor.

“After years of toiling away in a small inner-city apartment, making music in his bedroom closet, young rapper Courtney Rose is ready for his big break. Tired of waiting for opportunity, Courtney cooks up the publicity stunt of the century—running for mayor of his hometown in California to generate buzz for his music career. His master plan goes wildly awry, ending in the most terrifying of outcomes: an election victory. With the help of his mother and friends, Courtney will have to overcome his hubris if he wants to transform the struggling city he loves." Spears plays T.K. Clifton, the titular mayor’s best friend.

Before landing this role, Spears spent his acting time predominantly on the stage. He recently starred in Rachel Bonds’ play At the Old Place at La Jolla Playhouse in California and he worked with Tony Award-winning director Ruben Santiago-Hudson on Two River Theater’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and The Guthrie’s mounting of Trouble in Mind. He also worked on Picasso at the Lapin Agile at the Old Globe with Justin Long and Donald Faison.

Playbill recently published an extensive interview with Spears where he shares his background and the intricacies of this new challenge; “Spears is thrilled to be able to bring his stage craft to the masses through The Mayor. Here, he proves his theatre roots and shares what it’s like to get to work with Diggs on the original comedy.”

Tune in to The Mayor on Tuesday nights at 9:30 PM ET/8:30 PM CT on ABC.
