Horror Film by Bobby Miller '09 Released This Month

May 10, 2018

The Cleanse, written & directed by Alumnus Bobby Miller '09, released by Vertical Entertainment in theaters and on-demand (VOD) last week.

The film stars Johnny Galecki (The Big Bang Theory), Anna Friel (The Girlfriend Experience), Anjelica Huston (Prizzi's Honor), Oliver Platt (X-Men: First Class), Kyle Gallner (A Haunting in Connecticut) and Kevin J. O’Connor (Lord of Illusions).

The Cleanse follows the story of “Paul Berger, an unemployed, down-and-out, heartbroken man searching for happiness. When Paul sees an ad for a spiritual retreat promising to restart your life, he immediately signs up, hoping to cleanse himself and fix his broken life. But after only a few days, he discovers the cleanse is releasing more than just everyday toxins.”

Dead Central published an exclusive interview with Miller about the film, his creative process and future endeavors. When asked about the conception of the movie, Miller said: “I was really into the idea that our inner demons, our baggage, was something that can be initially cute at first. Like, a character being socially awkward at a party is usually really endearing and lovable in a movie. But, in real life, if that social anxiety isn’t kept in check, it can fester and become ugly.”

Even before its theatrical release, The Cleanse received great reviews. It holds a score of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Justin Chang from Variety reported that The Cleanse “touches a chord of bittersweet feeling that a more genre-oriented thriller approach might not have managed.” He also praised Miller by saying: “Miller’s decision to keep the emphasis entirely on character and theme shows impressive confidence. He gives the movie all the juice it needs.”

Gary Goldstein from the Los Angeles Times also praised Miller’s directorial work. “Writer-director Bobby Miller's oozy, eerie, yet weirdly soulful yarn feels like an original,” Goldstein wrote.

The Cleanse will also be available to rent or buy on ITunes, Amazon Prime, Google Play, Vudu, Microsoft Store, Fandango Now and YouTube Movies.
