James Ponsoldt '05 Adaptation of Dave Eggers' The Circle Debuts

Film alumnus James Ponsoldt’s ‘05 new film The Circle opened this weekend nationwide. Based on the 2013 novel by Dave Eggers, the film stars Emma Watson, Tom Hanks, and John Boyega.
The film tells the story of Mae, played by Emma Watson, who gets hired to work for the world’s largest and most powerful tech and social media company. She sees it as an opportunity of a lifetime. As she rises through the ranks, she is encouraged by the company’s founder, Eamon Bailey (Tom Hanks), to engage in a groundbreaking experiment that pushes the boundaries of privacy, ethics and ultimately her personal freedom. Her participation in the experiment, and every decision she makes, begins to affect the lives and future of her friends, family and that of humanity.
James Ponsoldt is originally from Athens, Georgia. A graduate of Columbia’s MFA Film Program, Ponsoldt debut Off the Black premiered to acclaim at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival. His second film Smashed, won the 2012 U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award. His third film The Spectacular Now received a Special Jury Award at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. His fourth film The End of the Tourpremiered at the Sundance Film Festival as well and was distributed by A24. He is also set to direct Wild City - an original live-action and CGI hybrid film for Disney.
