Alumna Lauren Wolkstein ’10 Directs Episode of New FX Series ‘Y: The Last Man’

Alumna Lauren Wolkstein '10 recently directed Episode 7 of the new DC Comics adaptation, Y: The Last Man, which aired on Hulu last Monday, October 11, 2021.

Based on the acclaimed graphic novel series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra, Y: The Last Man navigates a post-apocalyptic world in which a cataclysmic event decimates every mammal with a Y chromosome save for one cisgender man and his pet monkey. The series follows the survivors in this new world as they struggle with their efforts to restore what was lost and the opportunity to build something better. The series features an ensemble cast that includes Diane Lane, Ashley Romans, Ben Schnetzer, and Olivia Thirlby.

Lauren Wolkstein is an award-winning narrative filmmaker and television director. She served as the Producing Director for Season 5 of Ava DuVernay’s critically acclaimed series, Queen Sugar. Her debut feature, The Strange Ones, starred Alex Pettyfer and James Freedson-Jackson, and premiered to critical acclaim at SXSW in 2017. Her short films, including Social Butterfly (Sundance ’13) and Cigarette Candy (SXSW ’10 Grand Jury Prize), have played festivals around the world. Wolkstein is a MacDowell and Sundance Institute Fellow, and Filmmaker Magazine listed her as one of the “25 New Faces of Independent Film.” Wolkstein received her MFA in directing from Columbia University. She is currently an Associate Professor of Film and Media Arts at Temple University.
