Literary Translation at Columbia presented: A Conversation with Joyelle McSweeney and Johannes Göransson
Joyelle McSweeney (left) is the author of ten books of poetry, stories, novels, essays, translations and plays, including the forthcoming poetry double volume Toxicon and Arachne (Nightboat Books) and The Necropastoral: Poetry, Media, Occults, a work of decadent ecopoetics. With Johannes Göransson, she is the co-author of the translation manifesto Deformation Zone (Ugly Duckling Presse) and co-edits the international press Action Books, publishing such authors as Raúl Zurita, Hiromi Ito, Josué Guébo, Choi Seungja and Kim Hyesoon, while supporting translators like Daniel Borzutzky, Don Mee Choi, Katherine Hedeen, Katrine Øgaard Jensen, Michelle Gil-Montero, Jeffrey Angles, and many others. She is proud to serve as the 2020 mentor for ALTA’s Emerging Translators Mentorship Program in Korean poetry. She teaches at the University of Notre Dame.
Johannes Göransson (right) is the author of six books of poetry, Transgressive Circulation: Essays on Translation (Noemi Press) and the forthcoming memoir POETRY AGAINST ALL (Tarpaulin Sky Press). He is also the translator of books by Aase Berg, Ann Jäderlund, Johan Jönson, Henry Parland, and Kim Yideum. He teaches at the University of Notre Dame and, together with Joyelle McSweeney, he edits Action Books.
