Columbia Selects: MFA Readings at the KGB Bar | Fall 2019

Thursday, November 7, at 7 pm, for the next Columbia Selects reading of the 2019-20 season!

Our lineup this month:

Leah Dworkin '17 lives in New York. Her short stories have appeared in Fence, BOMB, Hotel, Juked, Cosmonauts Avenue and elsewhere. For the past few years she has been working on a collection of short stories, Hey Whitefish. She currently guest editing Manhattan for Dostoyevsky Wannabe's City Series, and is at work on her first novel.

Liza St. James '19 grew up in San Francisco. Her writing has appeared or is forthcoming in Wigleaf, Tin House, The Collagist, The Believer, Wolfman New Life Quarterly, BOMB, The Paris Review Daily, and other publications. She teaches writing at Cooper Union, and is an editor at Transit Books and at the literary annual NOON.

Nina Sharma '16 is a writer, performer, and educator from Edison, New Jersey currently living in New York City. She writes about the comic in the strange and the strange in the comic. Her essay “Shithole Country Clubs,” a reckoning with her Indian-American father's affiliation with Trump, and her own stance as a defiant first-generation daughter, was just named an Editors’ Pick at Longreads. This essay is part of her memoir-in-essay manuscript, Spell, a coming-of-age tale about navigating institutions, where personal history is incantation, old stories summon new ghosts and conspire with the forces of interracial love, bipolar disorder and most of all, laughter. Nina has an MFA from Columbia University, where she was a University Writing fellow. She is a proud recipient of the Diversity Scholarship at the Magnet Improvisation Theater and was recently listed in The Juggernaut article "Funny Women Everywhere" on up-and-coming South Asian women in comedy. Nina teaches at Barnard College. An Asian Women Giving Circle grantee, she leads her workshop, “No-Name Mind: Stories of Mental Health from Asian America” at The Asian American Writers’ Workshop and across New York City.

Columbia Selects is curated by Bryan VanDyke '00 and Emily Austin '10.

Come for the talent. Stay for the camaraderie and cocktails.
