Columbia Selects: MFA Readings at the KGB Bar

Join us Thursday, March 7, at 7 pm, for another spectacular reading with Columbia Selects! Selected by the Columbia Writing Program, our readers are sure to enchant and amaze.

Our lineup this month:

Mina Hamedi '17 grew up in Istanbul, Turkey and is of Turkish/Iranian descent. She received a BA from NYU’s Gallatin School and an MFA in Nonfiction from Columbia University's School of the Arts. Mina has had essays featured in Arcturus, Off Assignment, EuropeNow Journal, Apogee Journal, BOMB Magazine, Entropy, and the Columbia Journal. She works as a literary assistant for the agent Lynn Nesbit at Janklow & Nesbit Associates, and is currently writing a memoir about her grandfather, the family company he founded 75 years ago, and the nature of legacies.

Samuel Wright Fairbanks '14 writes prose, poetry, and miscellany. He graduated from Columbia University in 2014 with an MFA in Fiction. Sam has published poetry in the New England Review of Books and has a piece forthcoming in Mortar Magazine. His editorial work has appeared in the Reykjavík Grapevine. He has two current projects: a collection of poetry on queerness, post-reality, and depersonalization in the digital age, and a novel that chronicles the lives of farm-town faerie burnouts at the brink of global socio-ecological collapse. Sam lives in Boston.

Lacey Conley '14 is from Kendallville, Indiana. She graduated from Columbia University with an MFA in Nonfiction and the University of Evansville with degrees in Creative Writing and Psychology. She has worked as a copy editor and stand-up comedian. She is currently at work on a collection of essays about identity and connection: people being unabashedly themselves, acting and reacting as only they could, for better or worse—usually worse.

What is Columbia Selects? The first Thursday of each month the Columbia MFA program hosts a reading series featuring Writing Program alumni. These fresh talents are finished with or near to finished with their first books, but do not yet have a book contract and/or an agent. In recent years, many of our featured writers have achieved critical and commercial success. This is your chance to glimpse who you'll be reading in 2020!

Come for the talent. Stay for the camaraderie and cocktails.
