Columbia Selects: MFA Readings at the KGB Bar

Join us Thursday, November 1, at 7 pm, for another spectacular reading with Columbia Selects! Selected by the Columbia Writing Program, our readers are sure to enchant and amaze.

Columbia Selects is curated by Bryan VanDyke and Emily Austin.

Our lineup this month:

Anjuli Harvey '06 is a second-generation Asian Indian with an MFA in Fiction from Columbia University, a Master of Divinity in South Asian religions from Harvard Divinity School, and a PhD in Counseling Psychology and Religion from Boston University. She writes about Asian American racial/ethnic identity, sexuality, gender, and culture, drawing from real life and Hindu mythology. She grew up in Central New Jersey, but these days she is based in the Boston area, where she works as a psychologist and psychotherapist. Anjuli is currently working on a collection of short stories, as well as her first novel.

Brandon Kreitler '11 is the author of Late Frontier, selected by Major Jackson for the Poetry Society of America’s National Chapbook Fellowship, and the recipient of a Discovery / Boston Review Prize from the 92 Street Y Unterberg Poetry Center. He lives in New York City and edits the email Practice Catalogue. He is finishing a novel about love and art and the torsion of grace and ambivalence through which we experience them.

Emily Shevenock '14 received an MFA in poetry from Columbia University in 2014, and an MFA in photography from Parsons School of Design in 2016. She was selected for a residency at the Roxbury Writers Residency in October 2018. She was awarded an Academy of American Poets Bennett Poetry Prize in 2014. Her writing and art has appeared in Photoville New York, The Commonline Journal, Tiny Vices, Burn Magazine, The 2River View, Invisible City, and Primavera.

What is Columbia Selects? The first Thursday of each month the Columbia MFA program hosts a reading series featuring Writing Program alumni. These fresh talents are finished with or near to finished with their first books, but do not yet have a book contract and/or an agent. In recent years, many of our featured writers have achieved critical and commercial success. This is your chance to glimpse who you'll be reading in 2020!

Come for the talent. Stay for the camaraderie and cocktails.
