Columbia Selects: Alumni of the Writing Program

Our line up this month: Karen Havelin '13, Sukriti Yadava '14, and Elina Mishuris '16.

 

Elina Alter’s stories, translations, and criticism appear in BOMBSliceThe Paris Review DailyModern Poetry in TranslationGuernicaThe Southeast Review, and Brooklyn Magazine. She is the recipient of fellowships from VIDA and the Bread Loaf Translators’ Conference. Elina is currently at work on Rootless Cosmopolitan, a novel set in St. Petersburg and New York, as well as a collection of pieces about travelers, adventurers, immigrants, exiles, and other restless people. 

 

Karen Havelin received her MFA in 2013 and has since moved back to her native Norway. Her poems have been published in Norwegian literary magazines, and her fiction, nonfiction and translations have been published in M-dash, Narrativenortheast.com, Brooklyn Rail InTranslation, Words Without Borders, Agave Magazine, Lunchticket.org and Brooklyn Quarterly, as well as the Oslo Writers League anthologies These Twisted Roots and Some Shape of Beauty. She has won fellowships for emerging artists from the city of Bergen and from The Norway America Foundation. Karen is at work on a sexy novel about chronic illness told in reverse, called Please Read Carefully and Keep for Future Reference.

 

Sukriti Yadava's work has been published in The Times of India, The Hindu, Vox, Quartz, Apogee Journal, Vitamin W, and Megacity Fictions. She is also the co-writer of Untapped, an upcoming nonfiction book about the genius ideas of modern-day businesswomen. Sukriti holds an MFA from Columbia University, and a B.Sc. from the London School of Economics. After living in Mumbai, London, and NYC, she has recently moved to Denver.

 

What is Columbia Selects? The first Thursday of each month the Columbia MFA program hosts a reading series featuring Writing Program alumni. These fresh talents are finished with or near to finished with their first books, but do not yet have a book contract and/or an agent. In recent years, many of our featured writers have achieved critical and commercial success.
