Several Writing Program affiliates have been named finalists for the 2017 L.A. Times Book Prizes. They include alumni Emma Cline ‘13, Idra Novey ‘07, and Rebecca Schiff ‘09 and adjunct professor Tash Aw. All finalists were announced by the West Coast newspaper yesterday.

The Columbia-affiliated finalists were nominated in a range of categories. Emma Cline’s debut, The Girls, is a finalist for best Mystery/Thriller. Idra Novey’s debut novel, Ways to Disappear, and Rebecca Schiff’s debut story collection, The Bed Moved, are both finalists for the Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction. Tash Aw’s memoir, The Face: Strangers on a Pier, is finalist for the Christopher Isherwood Prize for Autobiographical Fiction, a new award.

All four books have received wide acclaim since they were published last year. Emma Cline’s The Girls was named one of the best books of the year by numerous publications; Idra Novey’s Ways to Disappear was a New York Times Editor’s Choice and an NPR Best Book of 2016; and Rebecca Schiff’s The Bed Moved was named one of the best fiction titles of the year by Kirkus Reviews and the Huffington Post. Tash Aw’s The Face has received high praise from publications such as the Los Angeles Review of Books and the Public Books, the online magazine edited by Columbia dean and professor Sharon Marcus.

The winners of the L.A. Times Book Prizes be announced at a ceremony at USC on April 21, the day before the start of the L.A. Times Festival of Books on USC’s campus.
