In this class we will explore some core elements of writing plays: perception, language, character and narrative. In particular we'll explore the way these  elements create a cycle which generates dramatic movement and structure. We’ll explore how the act of perception itself creates conflict within a shifting dramatic world on the stage. The class consists of assigned readings of theatre texts, along with writing exercises.

There is an emphasis on one's personal connection to theatrical language. The goal of the class is to generate new material moving towards a draft or drafts of a play.

First years, Fall. See Theatre Arts MFA Program page for all course information and requirements.
