Each summer, Columbia University School of the Arts welcomes more than 300 students to work with internationally renowned artists and arts scholars on Columbia’s campus in New York City – bringing together the unparalleled cultural and academic opportunities of an Ivy League University in one of the world's arts capitals.
Summer students choose from a diverse range of master classes, workshops, and credit and non-credit courses in Film, Writing, Visual Arts, and Theatre, taught by School of the Arts and visiting faculty. Courses are designed to engage and appeal to individuals at all levels of artistic experience, from beginning to professional artists.
The Television Writing Intensive is a six week, six credit program that provides a concentrated and encompassing introduction to the field of television writing, designed to prepare students for the professional worlds of sit-coms, one-hour dramas and crime procedurals. Gain the knowledge and authority to explore, examine and create the kind of groundbreaking work that is taking over cable and making its way onto the networks, here and around the world. Work on your own pilot and meet with some of TV's most influential writers, producers, and industry professionals.
Screenplay Revision Workshop is an intensive workshop dedicated to the analysis and rewriting of a feature-length screenplay. Students will bring a completed script in three acts (no less than 90 pp.) into the class, and begin by receiving a detailed analysis of the work by both the instructor and fellow students. Then, with the instructor’s guidance, students will devise a reasonable plan for revising the pages during the time of the workshop.
The Advanced Painting Intensive in New York is a six week, six credit, studio-based intensive for intermediate to advanced painters. Engage with a small group of just twelve students in individual and group critique, technical tutorials, exposure to the New York gallery and museum worlds, and lectures by nationally known visiting artists. Tailored to those who want to challenge and advance their work in an immersive and nurturing environment, and to those who want to develop a strong visual portfolio and written package appropriate for MFA program applications.
The Advanced Painting Intensive in Paris is an immersive four week, four credit, studio- and research-based program for intermediate to advanced painters. Through regular group and individual critiques each participating artist is mentored and encouraged to develop their ideas and art practice to a level more clearly aligned with their vision. The rigorous studio program is complemented by cultural studies engaging both historical and contemporary aspects of Parisian art. The intensive provides serious engagement with late 19th and 20th century French art history - visual art, literature, philosophy - with additional references to music and theater. Readings, lectures and field trips in these areas enhance the studio work.
The Advanced Printmaking intensive focuses on teaching students new/traditional printmaking techniques and developing skills on all levels. Students and professionals have access to all printmaking techniques but focus in on their primary area of interest. Throughout the course, students have the opportunity to visit artists’ studios and prime New York print shops. They are exposed to the inner workings of the LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies publishing operation at Columbia University. The course gives students opportunities to learn the processes of photogravure, intaglio, silkscreen, woodcut, and offset lithography by working with established contemporary artists and master printers.
Paris Then and Now: Circles of Influence
Live, write, and study at Columbia's satellite campus in Paris with SoA graduate Writing faculty and some of Paris' most celebrated contemporary writers in this intensive four week, four credit program. Focus on the mutual influences among French and English-speaking writers, from Modernism to the present moment, while writing your own fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, inspired by this storied cultural capital and one of the most important literary traditions in history.

COMMENTS FROM PAST SUMMER STUDENTS:
This course has changed the way I see theatre and has helped me to make cultural comparisons in the arts – something that is already enriching my approach to playwriting.
- Student for Contemporary French Theatre and Performance in Paris, Summer 2010
Jamal created an amazing environment in which we were made to feel that we could take creative risks; great introduction to the business if you intend on being a writer for television as a career.
- Student for TV Writing, with Film Program Chair Jamal Joseph, Summer 2010
This course is incredibly strong on developing the "bare bones" skills required for film photography. The guides given and the instruction are superior and the course instructor and TA were both very knowledgeable and effective.
- Student for Photography I, Summer 2010
I learned more in my two weeks of More Than Memoir than I've learned in my four years as a writing and literature major.
