Global Programs
Columbia University School of the Arts Global Programs are designed to create opportunities for international artistic exchange and dialogue between people from vastly different regions and circumstances around the world.
School of the Arts Global Programs offer an array of experiences -- several in partnership with Columbia University's Office of Global Centers and Office of Global Programs -- including international arts collaborations; exhibitions, film festivals, and conferences; arts workshops, seminars, master classes and credit-bearing courses; public arts programs for local communities; student and faculty exchanges and residencies; and many other unique opportunities for global collaboration and outreach.
Since launching in 2009, the school's Global Programs have sponsored formal collaborations in China, France, Italy, Jordan, and Uganda. Faculty and students have traveled and worked in multiple countries and regions from Gaza to Leipzig to Cannes. Highlights of 2012/13 include the expansion of our global Literary Translation program, a painting intensive and literary translation seminar at Columbia's Global Center for Europe in Paris, Cinema Studies in Cuba, a travel writing course in Amman, Jordan, and new collaborations in film and writing in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, among others.

The School of the Arts Global Programs and Film Program launched an exciting new collaboration with Maisha Film Lab in Uganda, a nonprofit training initiative for emerging East African filmmakers founded by acclaimed director Mira Nair ("Monsoon Wedding," "The Namesake," "Salaam Bombay"). Maisha is headquartered in Kampala and operates several intensive filmmaking labs per year, ranging from one to four weeks and providing hands-on intensive mentoring in screenwriting, directing, producing, cinematography, editing, sound recording and acting.
