Patricia Riggen is a director and producer from Mexico, currently living and working in Los Angeles. Her first feature film, Under the Same Moon (La Misma Luna), tells the story of a mother who comes to the United States in search of a better life for herself and her young son, whom she must leave behind with his grandmother. The film stars renowned Mexican performers Eugenio Derbez and Kate del Castillo. While at Columbia, Riggen directed and produced the award-winning short films “The Cornfield” and “Family Portrait.” Shown on HBO, the period film “The Cornfield” won the Ariel for Best Short Film (the Mexican equivalent of an Academy Award), the Student Academy Award Gold Medal, the Student “Emmy” for Best Narrative, and the DGA Best Latino Director Award. The documentary short “Family Portrait,” which examines poverty in Harlem, won the Short Filmmaking Award at Sundance. Before coming to Columbia, Riggen wrote documentary scripts and feature screenplays for Mexican television and served as production vice chairwoman for shorts at the Mexican Film Insitute for 1997–1998.
