Film MFA: Cinematography

Professor:

Mauricio Rubenstein

The goal of the course is for students to build a basic understanding of the equipment and the language of cinematography.

Whether your area of study is that of a director, a producer or a writer, communicating with your cinematographer will be richer and more productive when you are familiar and have had hands on experience with the equipment (cameras, lenses, lamps, grip, etc.) and techniques (film, digital, color correction, etc.) your cinematographer will use when shooting for you – and when you know the language of cinematography and can talk with your cinematographer in terms of composition, camera angles, mood, color, etc.

The course will start with the theory and evolve into practical. At this stage the students will be able to shoot scenes of their own projects.

To extend the knowledge past the resources at the campus there will be visits to a rental house and a post-production facility and some suppliers of equipment and materials will be invited to come and present their products.
