Theatre Arts: Models of Dramatic Structure

Professor:

Gideon Lester

What are the fundamental building blocks of drama, and how is analysis of a play’s structure useful to directors, playwrights and dramaturgs? This introductory course explores models of dramatic structure from Aristotle and the Greeks, through Shakespeare, neoclassicism, and the well-made play, to contemporary experimental and “post-dramatic” theatre.

The course will consider plays, dramatic theories, and productions, as well as practical methods for putting structural discoveries to use in rehearsal.

See Theatre Arts MFA Program page for all course information and requirements.
