Theatre alumnus Jon Kern ('07 SOA) is the recipient of the 2012 Laurents/Hatcher Playwriting Award for his play, Modern Terrorism, or They Who Want To Kill Us and How We Learn To Love Them.

The annual award offers the winning playwright a $50,000 cash prize in addition to $100,000 towards production of the play. The award is named for late playwright Arthur Laurents (Gypsy, West Side Story) and his late partner Tom Hatcher.

Modern Terrorism has been described as "a dark comedy about the difficulties of being a terrorist in the 21st century."

Last year, the inaugural Laurents/Hatcher award went to Jeff Talbot for his play The Submission, which was staged by MCC Theater in September 2011.
